Location  
Where is Carlstens fortress?
Carlstens fortress is located on the island of Marstrand, circa 45 kilometres north west of Gothenburg. You can go come here by car, bus or boat. Since car traffic
is forbidden on Marstrand, you can leave your car on Koön, the island next to Marstrand, and take the ferry across to Marstrand, where you find the fortress.
The ferry ride only takes a few minutes, due to the short distance between the islands.

Going by car
Description from Gothenburg: Take the E6 towards Oslo. At Kungälv (circa 20 km from Gothenburg), turn onto the 168 (with signs directing you towards Marstrand) and follow this route (around 25 km) until you get to Koön.



Parking
At the entrance to Marstrand-Koön you will see numerous signs for parking spaces. The general idea is: The closer to the ferry you park, the more it costs… During the winter season most of the parking spaces are free, see signs on location for more facts.


Going by bus
Bus numbers 302 and 312 to Marstrand go to Marstrand daily from Gothenburg’s Nils Ericson Terminal. Bus 312 is an express bus and the ride takes about 55 minutes, while bus 302 takes about 70 minutes because it also passes through the city of Kungälv. Bus 312 has the most departure times during the summer, but also has some departures in the wintertime. The buses’ final destination is Arvidsvik, on Koön, only 50 meters from the ferry to Marstrand.


The ferry
The ferry between Koön and Marstrand operates all day round, all year round. The ferry, which is named Lasse-Maja, takes you back and forth every 15 minutes during daytime and every half hour during nights, when summoned. Tickets to the ferry are sold in the small booth right by the ferry. At night, when the booth is closed, you can buy your tickets aboard the ferry. The ticket costs 10 sek for children and 15 sek for adults, the ticket is valid for a two-way ride. You need to stamp the ticket aboard the ferry, and keep it for the ticket control. 

Note! If you have arrived to Koön by bus, your bus ticket is also valid for the two-way ferry ride, so you do not have to buy ferry tickets.


How do I get to the fortress?
Once you’ve come to the island of Marstrand, just walk to the right along the docks. After about 200 metres, turn left onto the cobblestone street named “Kungsgatan”. Then you just follow that street until you reach the fortress. The last part of the street is a steep hill. Once you’ve gotten up the hill, you will be right by number 1 on the map to the right. Then turn right, pass the bulletin board and keep walking until you reach a gate where it says “PORT 23” (number 3 on the map). On the inside of this gate you find the entry hall in the brick house (number 4).
